Verdict? Not recommended

So we’re at Steakhouse 55. We’ve ordered our Porterhouse. The waiter mentions that the steak doesn’t come with any sides. And: would we like some? Perhaps a baked potato? Some asparagus?

Why, yes, thank you. Asparagus would be great.

Sadly, it wasn’t.

This dish is very simple: steamed asparagus, slathered in béarnaise sauce. Unfortunately, neither the asparagus nor the béarnaise really stand out, and together they are less than the sum of their parts.

The asparagus is fine. Not remarkable. It’s prepared very simply, which means the veg has a super mild flavor. Frankly, it could use a little something – salt, pepper, lemon, something – to punch it up.

The béarnaise, on the other hand, is just bland. It has no business whatsoever being put on top of the asparagus. It’s a flavor and texture buzzkill. I found myself scraping off the sauce as best I could just to get back to the basic asparagus.

In total, this was a disappointment – and an expensive one, at $13. I’d say skip it. (And, if you do order this, for some reason, have them put the sauce on the side.)
