Fresh off my Fried Pickle euphoria, the nice Carnation Cafe waiter swung by to deliver the main course: homemade meatloaf.

First impression: this is a lot of food. You get a generous slice of meatloaf, a scoop of mashed potatoes, some sautéed vegetables, a roll, and a side of butter. You could easily split this dish between two people.

The meatloaf itself is excellent. It comes with a dark gravy, and is finished with a ketchup top. The meat is moist, rich, and slightly spicy. There’s mushroom and onion in the mix; everything works. If you like meatloaf, you won’t be disappointed with this version.

The mashed potato is solid. It’s fine on its own, but it definitely does better when mixed in with the meatloaf gravy. (It’s not too crazy-buttery, either, which is nice.)

The vegetable medley is weak. It’s surprisingly oily, and is a flavor-free zone. Yeah, there’s zucchini, squash, and onion in here, but they don’t express themselves at all. The word that kept popping into my mind was “filler.” There’s no need to eat this part of the dish.

Finally, the roll is a standard dinner roll. It’s credible. I have no complaints, but it’s definitely improved with a small pat of butter.

This is a good dish, a good value, and easy to recommend. You’ll finish with a full stomach, and a smile on your face.
