It’d been a few months since I’d visited Flo’s V8 Cafe, and I was missing the place.
Bill and I strolled in around 7 PM, were handed laminated dinner menus by the friendly Cast Member, and we consulted our options.
I went with the BBQ Pork Ribs.
My recent review of the Pork Spareribs at River Belle Terrace was fresh in my mind. This seemed like a great chance to do a little compare-and-contrast between the two restaurants.
Flo’s dish consists of four ribs, each slathered in a thick barbecue sauce (Flo’s calls it “House Made Coca-Cola BBQ Sauce”). The ribs sit on top of a creamy pile of mashed potatoes. And lastly, there’s a dollop of coleslaw hiding out at far end of the plate.
The ribs are thick and meaty, and cooked really well. They’re easy to eat (but be sure to grab extra napkins). The sauce is different from what they’re serving at the River Belle Terrace; it’s mild and sweet, and not very tangy. I liked Flo’s sauce a bit more.
The potatoes, for their part, are smooth. They’re not too chunky or buttery. I found them to be a great texture counterpart to the ribs. And the slaw is fine, but not exceptional. It’s a little thinner and sweeter than I generally like my coleslaw to be, but it’s fine. Your mileage may vary.
This is a great balance of flavor and texture, and, at under $13, a good value (River Belle’s ribs are $24). Its hard to see how you’d go wrong with this dish. Absolutely recommended.
