It’s a super-sunny Sunday morning at Disney California Adventure, and breakfast is wearing off. We’re in need of a pick-me-up, a calorie boost. Something to hold us through the early afternoon. As luck would have it, we’re in Hollywood Land.
Time for a dog at Award Wieners.
On our last trip to Award Wieners, we tried Dog #1 – the Chili Cheese Dog. This time, we’re going up by one: Dog #2 – the Barbecue Hot Link.
I have semi-high hopes for this dish. I’ve been pretty happy with Disney’s spicy hot dogs (especially the Hot-Link Corn Dog at Corn Dog Castle), and I’ve had good luck with the various barbecue sauces around the park. If I can get a spicy dog, slathered in barbecue and topped with some grilled onions … well, that sounds mighty fine. Mighty fine indeed.
Turns out this dog is actually pretty disappointing.
The dog itself is surprisingly generic. Yes, the spicy dog has more snap and oomph than a regular hot dog. But it’s pretty boring. There’s just not much to it other than chewy texture.
Second: the barbecue sauce. It’s weak. This is more “slightly tangy ketchup” than honest-to-goodness barbecue sauce.
Third: the bun. Slightly stale, super bready. As a result, it dominates the dish. Whatever mild goodness might be happening with the dog and the sauce are smothered to death by the bun.
Lastly: onions. They’re physically present … but that’s all I can really say. They’re that forgettable.
I wanted to like this dish, but it’s just too mediocre. If you’re at Award Wieners, stick with the Chili Cheese Dog.
UPDATE: As of March 2017, this dish is no longer available.
