Elaine, on the other hand, examines the menu, squints at her options, and orders the Vegetarian Portobello-Mushroom Philly.
The Cast Member looks up from the cash register. “You know there’s no meat on that, right?”
The Cast Member shrugs, smiles, and completes the order. Minutes later, we’re seated at a table. After the first bite, it’s obvious: she made the better choice. The Vegetarian Philly is delightful.
This is not a “vegetarian hot dog” – a tube of tofu or textured vegetable protein, like you find in the cold case at Whole Foods. Rather, this is a medley of sauteed vegetables (mushrooms, red peppers), combined with a handful of shredded cheese, and delivered on a toasted, buttered bun.
The combination of flavors and textures is excellent. The bun is soft, but the toast gives it a slight edge. The veg is fresh and cooked just right. The cheese adds mouth feel and an extra nice bit of flavor. It’s all perfectly balanced, a team effort.
This doesn’t need anything else – no ketchup, mustard, relish. It’s thoroughly enjoyable as-is. And I’d gladly order it again.
