Elaine, Chris and I are are fighting our way through a very-crowded California Adventure. People are everywhere; queues are insanely long; the sun is high and hot. We decide to take a break from the madness, and get a beer.

We are near Sonoma Terrace. And despite my better judgment, we elect to head in.

Regular readers of the blog will know that my last two dishes at Sonoma – the Italian Cold Cut Plate and the Gourmet Cheese Plate – were some of the most disappointing things I’ve eaten as part of this project.

And yet: Sonoma Terrace is a quiet refuge. It has a good beer selection. So we order our beverages, and I get the Warm Bavarian Pretzel to go with them. (I also drop an extra $0.99 for the accompanying “Ortega Cheese Dip.”) I am hoping that a good, hearty pretzel, with a nice side of cheese sauce, will make our afternoon just that much better.

Sadly, the pretzel is terrible.

Tough. Chewy. Slightly stale. Super salty. In short: it’s no fun to eat.

Each of us tried it, said, “whoa,” and stopped. From there, it just lay on the table, ignored and forlorn.

The cheese sauce is equally disappointing. As you can see from the photo, it comes in a small plastic cup. The cup is super warm; we had to wrangle it with a handful of napkins. After opening the lid (and avoiding a burst of steam), we dipped a bit of the pretzel to try it out. Ugh. No good. It’s flavorless Cheez-whiz.

I’ve had stadium pretzels. I’ve had theme park pretzels. I’m willing to grade on a curve. But despite that, this is definitely on the “avoid” end of the spectrum. I have a hard time imagining anyone being happy with this.

As Elaine quipped, “Go to Wetzel’s.” I totally agree.
