Our second entry in the “give Smokejumpers a chance” sweepstakes is the Chili Cheese Fries.

This dish was Elaine’s idea. I was standing at the cashier, dithering over which burger to buy, when she turns to me and says, “Chili Cheese Fries. That’s what I want.”

They’re not expensive (under $6). They’re fries. Presumably, they have chili and cheese on them. No objections here.

We collect our food from the counter. In fact, this is one of the more literal dishes at California Adventure. It’s fries + chili + cheese, in a paper basket. Nothing fancy, no adornments. It is what it is.

Back at the table, we break out a couple of plastic forks and dig in.

This totally works.

On one level, this is what you expect: standard Disney fries. Heated chili (out of a can). Shredded cheese mixture (out of a bag). And yet … it’s tasty. Satisfying. There are chunks of meat and bean in the chili. The cheese is pretty good (way better than the inert cheddar on the Bacon Cheddar Burger). And the fries have just the right amount of texture and saltiness to keep the thing hanging together. Ketchup is totally optional, here.

The Chili Cheese Fries are a happy-making, inexpensive snack. We really liked them. (In fact, they became a ‘sleeper hit’ at the table.) I don’t want to oversell their quality, but I’d eat them again anytime. Gladly.
