Fantasyland’s Troubadour Tavern sells an item we consider a “standout” here at Disneyland Eats: the Bacon & Sour Cream Stuffed Baked Potato. It is, in a word, spectacular. We love it. And we rave about it.
As it happens, Troubadour offers a second baked potato: the Broccoli & Cheese. It’s a sibling. An alternative. Given our love for the Bacon & Sour Cream, we’re pretty excited. Conditions are perfect: it’s a cool December day in Anaheim. We’re hoping for something warm and hearty.
Like the Bacon & Sour Cream, the potato is made-to-order, and served in a thin paper basket. I get the dish, retrieve forks and knives, and head back to the table.
Initial observation: this seems like a simpler dish than the Bacon & Sour cream. The potato is slightly smaller. It has just three ingredients: the potato, broccoli, and cheese. (And, as you can see from the photo, it’s drenched in cheese.)
Second observation: the flavors are fine, but nothing special. The potato itself is as good as ever. The broccoli florets are reasonably fresh. But the cheese – the blanket of cheese! – is really, really underwhelming. It just lays there. Brings the whole thing down.
I expected this to feel decadent, ala Smothered Potato Chips, and instead found myself wishing it just tasted more like … anything. The concept isn’t bad, but the execution is thwarted by the cheese sauce. Heck, throwing some melted Velveeta on there would have been a big-time upgrade.
This isn’t horrible, but it’s not not worth eating again. Get the Bacon & Sour Cream instead.
