It’s advertising “Banana Corn Dogs.”
It’s a seasonal offering. A dessert: “Two mini bananas in corn and honey batter. Topped with powdered sugar. Served with a mango and raspberry dipping sauce.”
Oh, man. Of course. Yes, yes, yes.
I’ll confess to being a little afraid. My last outing with a “nontraditional” hot dog was the Cheddar Cheese Stick at Corn Dog Castle. (It’s dreadful.)
On the other hand: this is kinda exciting. Something new, something seasonal, and … corn-dog-as-dessert? Crazy. Maybe brilliant. We gotta do it.
We are handed the dish. It’s fairly small. (When Disney says, “mini bananas,” they mean it.) It’s two dogs, dusted with powdered sugar, and two small plastic containers of dipping sauce. The orange one is mango; the purple one is raspberry.
We each pick dog, and take our first bites.
The bananas are just the right level of ripeness. The breading isn’t too thick. The powered sugar adds a mild sweetness. Everything just converges in the mouth, and makes the day better.
The sauces are fine, but totally unnecessary. Both Elaine and I preferred our dogs “raw,” without sauce. The mango is very mild; the raspberry is more aggressive. Both are sweeter than they need to be.
The Banana Corn Dog is a delightful, inexpensive snack – waaaaay better than a churro or some other traditional theme-park goodie. Give it a try while you can – I don’t know how long Disney will keep ’em.
UPDATE: As of June 2017, this dish is no longer available.
