Meet the Uptown Chili Dog.
On paper, this has everything going for it. A premium dog? Check. Toasted bun? Check? Chili? Pepper jack cheese? Fritos (Fritos!)? Check, check, and check.
In the mouth, however, it’s a different story.
The dog is a muddle. A mush. A meh. The ingredients are uninspired. It’s the sort of thing you bite in to, and then chew reluctantly. There’s no hook, no pop, no pizzaz. The chili is too mild. The cheese is just texture. The dog gets lost under all the toppings. And the Fritos don’t have the strength to move the needle.
(The fries, however, are still excellent. If you think of this dish as “fries with a side of underwhelming chili cheese dog” it actually becomes more appealing.)
No menu is perfect. There’s always a dud. This is one of them.
