Rafa and I have just come off Pirates of the Caribbean, and are strolling through Adventureland. The Pirates queue was much longer than expected, and now we’ve got the grumblies. We need something to tide us over until dinner.
We spot Bengal Barbecue, and immediately head over.
Today, it’s time to give the Bengal Beef Skewer a try.
The dish arrives. The skewer is all on its own, on a paper plate, looking a little lonely. It’s a small, simple skewer of steak, drenched in a brownish sauce (the menu calls it “sweet Zulu sauce”).
I pick it up, and get to work.
The meat is decent. It’s cooked well done, slightly tough, and a little chewier than expected. For that, it’s giving off a decent amount of steak flavor. Points for that.
The sauce, on the other hand, makes the skewer wet … but isn’t doing much else. It’s very, very mild. Almost an affectation. It’s not adding anything. (It does, however, make the skewer messier to eat. Grab napkins.)
This isn’t bad, bit it’s not great either. It’s muddled. The steak flavor is fine, but the sauce and the toughness of the meat compromise things. It’s not something I’d want to eat again. And, like a lot of Bengal’s skewers, it’s rather expensive for being such a small portion.
