The scene: Dinner. Carthay Circle Restaurant. Starters have been served and cleared. Mains are on the way, but slowly. The kitchen seems busy tonight.
Feels like an excellent time for a cocktail.
I flip through the menu, and spot Pimm’s Punch. It’s liqueur, gin, strawberry, and lemonade. Sounds like it could be refreshing and light. Let’s do it.
The drink appears in a tall glass. It’s pink, served with ice, and accompanied by a strawberry + raspberry skewer. I don’t quite know what I was expecting, but this wasn’t it.
I grab the straw, and take a sip.
This is just juice.
Seriously: it tastes like a Strawberry Hi-C. There’s (theoretically) alcohol in the glass, but it’s clearly in the Witness Protection Program. It’s not refreshing; it’s just sweet. The overall sensation is one of drinking slightly-spiked fruit juice.
The Carthay Circle has a number of excellent cocktails (see: The Derby). This is not one of them. Skip it.
