Rafa and I are having dinner at the Carthay Circle Restaurant. I’ve ordered the Grilled Angus Beef Ribeye, and am munching happily, grooving on the steak-and-potato goodness.

Rafa decided on a different meat+starch: Braised Short Rib with Gnocchetti Pasta.

This is a decent portion of food. It’s a square piece of short rib, sitting on a bed of pasta, with green beans and broccolini. The pasta and veg are drenched in a yellowish sauce.

We dig in.

The short rib is surprisingly dry. It comes apart easily with a knife and fork, but it’s stringy and not that much fun to eat. The moisture escaped at some point, and is likely halfway to Tiajuana by now. It’s protein, but not pleasurable.

The pasta is cooked well, as are the beans and broccolini. The sauce is spicy. Red-peppery. And there are a handful little nuts sprinkled throughout. This was all initially pleasurable, but the flavor went flat after a few bites and never came back.

This is an acceptable dish, but there’s nothing to commend it. No love in the flavor. No surprise. It’s just calories. Which is a pity.
