Back when Flo’s V8 Cafe opened in 2012, they got a fair bit of press for offering a unique, tasty, vegetarian option on their menu. It’s called the “Veggie Tater Bake.” I’ve heard good things from my Disneylander friends since it came out.
For some reason, we’ve not reviewed the Tater Bake for Disneyland Eats.
Presentation-wise, this is pretty unassuming. The Tater Bake comes in a cast-iron circular dish, about six inches in diameter. It’s composed of mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, and bulgur wheat, topped with a blanket of cheddar cheese. You also get a side of sliced fruit – melon and pineapple, basically – in a plastic cup.
I pick up my fork, spear it into the Tater Bake, and grab my first bite.
This is really, really good.
This is comfort food. And it’s so much better than I expected. It’s spicy! Not massively so, but there’s an undercurrent of spice and surprise that made me super happy. The “roasted vegetables” clearly include peppers; the bulgur adds a little something extra. The potatoes and cheese even out the spice, modulate it, and wrap the whole package up with a bow on top. This isn’t a boring mashed-potatoes dish: it’s much better than that.
This is good quality and a delight. I could imagine some diners being put off by “vegetarian fare” – don’t be. This is great. I’d gladly eat this again. It’s an easy, easy recommend.
