Elaine’s hungry. We’ve been seated at the Napa Rose Lounge for a few minutes, and she suddenly has the rumblies. I initially suggest the Diligently Selected Cheeses, but she’s on the prowl for something new, something novel.
She selects the “Crispy California Artichoke Fritters.”
The dish arrives as three small fritters, each sitting in a purée and topped with a carrot or bit of onion.
There are four of us at the table, but three fritters. Friends being friends, we make it work. Nobody gets their own fritter, but everyone gets a bite or two.
These are really, really good. The fritters are nicely crisped. They have a good, strong flavor, where the vegetables (potatoes, artichoke) come through loud and clear. And the accompanying on-the-plate veggies are all perfectly cooked.
This is a small, simple, perfectly executed appetizer. It took the edge off. And we’d gladly eat it again, anytime.
