Napa Rose Lounge has a Manhattan on the menu.
I am getting fairly acquainted with Manhattans at Disneyland. The best one is at the Carthay Circle; the one to avoid is at the Cove Bar. The difference, near as I can tell, is that the Carthay’s cocktail people are some of the best in the resort. They know what they’re doing.
Now, I’m a fan of the cocktail situation at Napa Rose Lounge. Their people seem to know what they’re doing, too. So I have high hopes for their take on a Manhattan.
I order, and the drink arrives. It’s gorgeous. A dark, reddish-brown, clear liquid. Three cherries, impaled on a clear plastic spike. The smell wafting off the beverage is divine, and hits you right between the eyes.
I pick it up, and take a sip.
It’s … interesting.
It’s more medicinal than I expected. And darker. Smokier. Strong. There’s a lot of booze in here, and it feels like the alcohol is keen to show you just how big and important it is.
Bryce tried the drink. He shook his head as if to clear it, handed the glass back to me, and said, “You really have to be in the mood for something like that.”
This isn’t my Manhattan. I could see some people enjoying it, but it’s not for me. Too strong, too brutal. Not enough nuance. It needs more balance, more blending. Right now, it’s just … powerful. Uncomfortably so.
