Verdict? Not recommended

I’ve just had a (very) disappointing Breakfast Croissant at Surfside Lounge. But I’m not willing to leave Surfside after a single, poor experience. So: once more into the breach. A second dish is secured. Specifically, the Machaca Burrito.

Now, I love a good burrito. A good breakfast burrito? Even better. And this sounds promising: “Scrambled eggs, beef machaca, potatoes, bell peppers, onions & tomatillo salsa. Sour cream on the side.”

The dish arrives. It’s the exact same visual presentation as the Breakfast Croissant: a sealed, circular, plastic container, black on the bottom and clear on the top. You crack it open, and steam escapes.

That’s where the similarities end. This is a good-sized burrito, sitting in a lake of green salsa, with a small plastic container of sour cream on the side. Bits of cheese dot the landscape.

I break out the knife and fork, and dig in.

My initial impression is positive: good stuff here. The mouth feel is great. There’s a bit of spice underneath the flavor. It’s a super, super, super wet burrito (which I really like). I’m chewing, and smiling, and feeling very happy.

Then the second and third bites happen. And then the fourth. And by then, the charm is gone.

There’s no coherent flavor here. It’s just a jumble. Great texture, drenched in green salsa. If I hadn’t read the ingredients list, I’d have a hard time telling you what is in the dish. (Potato? Something … else?) It’s all very filling, but wholly, totally, and utterly forgettable. There’s not one note in this that will stick with you after you swallow.

I wanted to like this, but in the end — too bland and too boring. Don’t eat this.
