So I’m standing at the cashier at the Hungry Bear Restaurant, ordering the Classic Cheeseburger. The burger comes with fries or slaw; I chose the slaw.

Then I spot Onion Rings on the menu board.

Oh, hell. Yes. Please. One of those.

The rings arrive with the burger. It’s a small paper basket, holding five good-sized rings. They look perfectly cooked – not underdone, not burned. Their crispness is visible.

I bite in. They’re good. They’re as crispy as they appear; the shell cracks and crunches quite nicely. The onions are good, too – not too mild, not too sharp. These are solid rings. They’re not excellent (the batter is too plain, too bland), but certainly good … and certainly something I’d eat again.

(One quibble: the Hungry Bear should offer ranch or tartar sauce as sides with this, instead of the ketchup-n-mustard packets they have at their condiment bar. But that’s a detail.)
