Verdict? Not recommended

So I’m at the Red Rose Taverne. I’m in an excellent mood. I tried (and loved) the Garden Mozzarella Flatbread, and am now feeling like a bit of dessert.

I select the Lemon Rose Cake.

This is a beautiful dish. It’s a small piece of cake, decorated to look like a rose blossom, framed on a round, black-plastic plate. It’s so good-looking, in fact, that it feels a bit … wrong to destroy it by eating it.

No matter. We’re trying this. Utensils are procured. In we go.

This is … odd.

The cake is billed as “lemon mousse with strawberry-rose filling” but it has the taste and texture of a super, super, super mild lemon custard. It’s like eating frosting, but without any kind of clear, strong, discernible taste. It’s almost flavor-free.

I keep going. There are a few pockets of (muted) fruit flavor, and some kind of Oreo-cookie base. But nothing comes together, nothing sticks. It’s just kinda weird. And not very good.

Visually, this is delightful. On the tongue, not so much. If you order this, treat it as something you look at, not as something you eat.

Not recommended.
