Verdict? Not recommended

Elaine and I are back at the Plaza Inn for a late lunch. She’s craving the Chicken; I’m in the mood for a salad.

A previous salad at Plaza Inn – the Cobb — was great: fresh, crisp, delightful; loaded with great ingredients; expertly mixed. I’m hoping for a similar experience today.

I step to the counter, and order.

The Friendly Cast Member begins assembling and mixing my salad. Greens first, followed by a steady parade of ingredients: chicken, red onion, cheddar cheese, bacon bits. And, finally, croutons. She puts it together on a simple, round plate and hands it across.

Back at the table, the forks come out.

For all the ingredients and work that went in to this salad, the overall flavor is very, very mild. The house-made Ranch dressing is boring. The dish feels a bit soggy. Everything is “just OK” – the lettuce, the beans, the add-ons. Even the chicken – ostensibly “pesto-marinated” – is a non-factor. Everything … just … sits …. there.

Eventually, I found myself picking off key bits – chunks of cheddar, bites of chicken, the occasional crouton – and ignoring the dish as a whole. Not a good sign.

This is a salad with a lot of promise, a great presentation, and poor follow-through. It never comes together.
