Verdict? Not recommended

I’m at Tangaroa Terrace for breakfast. I’ve just tried the “Breakfast Platter” (their version of the “All-American Breakfast” at Carnation Cafe) and found it underwhelming.

I want to try something else.

On our last visit to Carnation, we tried (and liked) their “Steel-Cut Oatmeal.” Turns out Tangaora also offers Steel-Cut Oatmeal.

This could be promising.

I step to the counter and order. The friendly Cast Member smiles at me, and says, “with everything on it?”

Uh … yes. Yes, please.

The dish arrives on a red oval plate. It’s two parts: the oatmeal (in a square black dish) and a small fruit cup. The oatmeal is topped with a large pat of butter, a sprinkling of brown sugar, and some kind of pineapple compote.

The first bite hits my tongue, and …

(sigh)

Like the Breakfast Platter, this tastes cheap. The texture is less “smooth and creamy” and more “slick and silky.” It’s a little off-putting. There’s a lot of butter, but it doesn’t add much in terms of flavor. And the pineapple compote is sugary-sweet, with a fake-pineapple flavor, like you might get in a soda. (I think they were going for a fun, Polynesian vibe with the pineapple, but it comes off as odd.)

It’s hard to screw up oatmeal … but it’s possible. Skip this dish.
