One fun thing about California Adventure’s Studio Catering Company is that they’re a seasonal / promotional restaurant. If Disney is pushing a theme, like “Summer of Heroes” then they often change the Studio Catering menu to support it (for instance, the “Super Hero-Sized Sub“).
Today, the menu is Guardians of the Galaxy-themed. And we’re ordering … (deep breath) … “The Most Dangerous Tacos In The Galaxy.”
(If I can be permitted a sidebar, here: I don’t know who at Disney is responsible for naming these things, but they seriously need to up their game. This name is even more phoned-in than “Darth By Chocolate” over at Galactic Grill. And that’s saying something.)
The tacos arrive. There are three of them, sitting in a paper basket lined with fake newsprint. They smell … great. The menu describes them as “Barbacoa beef tacos with green onion slaw, purple cabbage, pickled onions, habanero salsa.”
I pick one up. It’s a two-bite taco; three, tops. The small green tortilla is warm in my hand, and bits of ingredients are falling back on to the paper basket. I take a bite.
This is great.
Seriously: great. The Barbacoa is nicely seasoned. The slaw add all kinds of flavor and crunch. The pickled onions and salsa add some spice. It works on all levels.
This is the kind of thing you hope for when you order a taco. It’s a terrific, simple, flavorful snack.
I finished in two bites, and reached for another tortilla. You will too.
