Gary hasn’t been to the parks in forever. (His last trip was as a teenager.) He’s sick of hearing me talk about how much fun they are. “Let’s go,” he says, “And see what all this is about.”

Game on.

We hit Disneyland at rope drop, and have been FastPassing our way around the park all morning. The afternoon heat has started to arrive. And we’re in need of some calories.

Fortunately, I made us a reservation at River Belle Terrace.

Gary is impressed by the menu: “I was expecting burgers and fries.” (He went with the Pork Spareribs.)

I got River Belle’s Chopped Salad.

The salad comes with your choice of protein: chicken, shrimp, brisket or tofu. I ask the Friendly Cast Member what she’d suggest. “Anything but the brisket,” she says.

Uh, cool. Let’s do chicken.

The salad arrives. It’s a generous portion on a round plate. It gives off a distinct “Plaza Inn Cobb Salad” vibe. I’m excited. It seems well-dressed, with lots of lettuce and fresh vegetables. I spot tomato, corn, beans, bits of pickle. Heck, there are even onion straws(!) on the top. The chicken, glazed with barbecue sauce, is on the side.

Great. Fork’s out. Let’s go.

The first bite is surprisingly … bad. The dressing is a creamy ranch; it’s fine for what it is. The onion straws are adding crunch and texture; nice work there. The problem is the quality of the lettuce and vegetables. They’re really poor.

Seriously: wilted lettuce. Soggy tomato. Mushy beans. Blech.

I try the chicken. It’s served cold and … not remarkable. Refrigerated chicken, slathered in a bit of barbecue sauce.

I get a few more bites in, and then a few more. My disappointment keeps growing.

This is a decent idea for a salad, sabotaged by poor ingredients. Skip it.
