Verdict? Not recommended
We’re lunching at River Belle Terrace, and have just finished a Terrace Wedge. It wasn’t very good. So we’re hoping to get a strong performance from our next dish: the Burnt Ends Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
To be honest, I’d originally planned to order the Pulled Pork Sandwich. (It’s a favorite.) But the Burnt Ends Grilled Cheese caught my eye – it’s new since our last visit.
You get two sides with the dish. I go for coleslaw and baked beans.
When the dish arrives, I’m … underwhelmed. Low curb appeal. A flat sandwich, draped with some onion straws. There’s not much in the way of ooey-gooey goodness creeping out of the bread, which is what you want from grilled cheese.
I pick up the first half, and take a bite.
Yeah, just “meh.” That’s the reaction.
This is less a sandwich, and more a collection of ingredients. The burnt ends are in there, but they don’t add much flavor. The cheese is in there, but it’s basically Velveeta. The pickle relish is in there, but … isn’t helping. And the whole thing is super, super, super dry – you’re desperate for a side of tomato soup, just to dunk the silly thing.
On the sides: the beans are terrific. The slaw is wholly unmemorable.
This is an interesting idea for a sandwich. No question. But the execution of the dish is startlingly poor. When you consider the price ($23!) and the fact that the Pulled Pork Sandwich is on the same menu … nobody should order this. It’s just not competitive.
